Setting Spindle Speed

The spindle range lever and spindle speed lever,
shown in Figure 63, are used to select one of the
8 spindle speeds.

The spindle speed and range levers control the
gear configuration in the headstock to produce
the selected spindle speed.
To avoid damaging gears, ALWAYS make
sure the spindle is completely stopped
BEFORE moving the spindle speed levers.
The chart below shows the various combinations
of lever positions for achieving a desired speed.

Configuration Example

Figure 65 shows the levers positioned for a
spindle speed of 460 RPM.
Note: If the spindle speed levers do not easily
adjust into position, rotate the spindle by hand
while you apply pressure to the lever. When the
gears align, the lever will easily move into place.
If you have trouble rotating the spindle by hand,
you can use the spindle key or a chuck key to get
additional leverage—be sure to remove the key
when you are done.
