FELLING LARGE TREES (6 inches in diameter or larger) The notch method is used to fell large trees. A notch is cut on the side of the tree in the desired direction of fall. After a felling cut is made on the opposite side of tree, the tree will tend to fall in the direction of the notch.
Overcutting Undercutting Undercutting involves cutting on the un- derside of the log with top of saw against the log. When undercutting use light up- ward pressure. Hold saw firmly and main- tain control. The saw will tend to push back toward you. WARNING: Never turn saw upside down to undercut.
S Remove larger branches with the cut- ting techniques described BUCKING WITHOUT A SUPPORT. S Always use an overcut to cut small and freely hanging limbs. Undercut- ting could cause limbs to fall and pinch the saw. PRUNING WARNING: Limit pruning to limbs shoulder height or below.
CHECK CHAIN TENSION WARNING: Wear protective gloves when handling chain. The chain is sharp and can cut you even when it is not moving. Chain tension is very important. Chain stretches during use. This is especially true during the first few times you use your saw.
