Although this is ideal, other configurations with fewer speakers—no subwoofer or no center speaker, or even no surround speakers—will work.

All unnecessary signal processing is bypassed, and you’re left with the pure analog or digital sound source (see Stream direct with different input signal formats on page 101).

From the listening position, face the two speakers with your arms outstretched pointing at each speaker. Try to make the two tones sound as if they are arriving simultaneously at a position slightly in front of you and between your arm span.
