5.2.3 Configuration and Status Variable Interface

The configuration and status variable interface provides a method to read and write
configuration and status variables. The interface works as follows:
Write Variable Command (0x81):
1. Put value to write in Variable Data words.
2. Put variable index, in Byte 0 of Variable Command word, and set Byte 1 to 0x81.
3. Variable Status word is set to match Variable Command word if command accepted, or
to 0x7Fxx if error where xx=error code.
4. Input Variable data words is set to value written.
5. Clear Variable Command word to reset interface.
Variable status word is cleared, indicating interface is ready for next command.
Read Variable Command (0x82):
1. Put variable index, in Byte 0 of Variable Command word, and set Byte 1 to 0x82.
2. Variable Status word is set to match Variable Command word if command accepted, or
to 0x7Fxx if error where xx=error code.
If command is accepted, input Variable data words will contain the variable value.
3. Clear Variable Command word to reset interface.
Variable status word is cleared, indicating interface is ready for next command.

Variable data words contain the value to write to a variable.
