TCP
Transfer Control Protocol. The protocol belongs to the transport layer and establishes a
connection between two entities on the application layer. It guarantees reliable and in-or-
der delivery of data from sender to receiver, as opposed to ->UDP.
TLS
Transport Layer Security. Ensures privacy between communicating applications. Typical-
ly, the server is authenticated, but mutual authentication is also possible.
U
UDP
User Datagram Protocol. A minimal message-oriented transport layer protocol used espe-
cially in streaming media applications such as ->VoIP. Reliability and order of packet deliv-
ery are not guaranteed, as opposed to ->TCP, but ->UDP is faster and more efficient.
URI
Uniform Resource Identifier. A compact string of characters used to identify or name a re-
source.
URL
Uniform Resource Locator. A special type of ->URI which provides means of acting upon
or obtaining a representation of the resource by describing its primary access mechanism
or network location.

VLAN
Virtual Local Area Network. A method of creating several independent logical networks
within a physical network. For example, an existing network can be separated into a data
and a voice VLAN.
VoIP
Voice over IP. A term for the protocols and technologies enabling the routing of voice con-
versations over the internet or through any other ->IP-based network

WAP
Wireless Application Protocol. A collection of protocols and technologies aiming at en-
abling access to internet applications for wireless devices. WAP can also be used by the
OpenStage phone.
