Writing Formulas That the Solver
Understands
Sometimes a formula printed in a book or written out longhand will
have to be adapted before it can be typed into the formula list. For
example, examine the following formula for calculating the annual
yield on T -bills*, printed as it might appear in a book:
$
'c.::
1 :..:: O -,-, O::. . ; O:. . : °O----' P c:. . : r:. . : . i c. = . . : e:. . . .
X
Annual yield
=
-
360 days
price
days to maturity
The formula requires several changes before the solver can under-
stand it.
In discussing formulas, it helps to define several terms:
• User-variables
are the named items-for example, Annual yield,
price, and days to maturity.
• Constants
are numbers-for example, $10,000, 360 days.
• Operators
perform arithmetic-for example, x, and -.
• Functions
do calculations involving one or two numbers-for exam-
ple, SQRT(x), USPV(i%:n). Functions are described in the next
section.
*
The price in this formula is in terms of full units of $10,000.
