    Playable Discs This Player will play Digital Video Discs (DVDs),Video Compact Discs (VCDs), Super Video CDs,Audio CDs, and Super Audio CDs.This Player also will play MP3 files (music tracks compressed with MPEG Audio Layer 3 technology) recorded onto a Compact Disc Recordable (CD-R) or a Compact Disc Rewritable (CD-RW).

    Your TV may have only an RF-style jack, usually labeled Antenna In or 75 ohm or RF In.You will need an RF modulator in order to view the Player’s materials at your TV. See your electronics retailer or contact Philips for details on RF modulator availability and operations.

    DIGITAL AUDIO OUT PCM-MPEG2- Dolby Digital-DTS COAXIAL OPTICAL Connect the supplied yellow video cable to the Player’s yellow CVBS (VIDEO OUT) jack and to the corresponding VIDEO IN jack on your TV. There are two CVBS (VIDEO OUT) jacks in case you want to connect the Player to two separate TVs. For simply connecting the Player to a single TV, you may use either of the jacks, but you will not have to use both.

    16 Quick Disc Playback AUDIO CD VIDEO CD DVD 795SA DVD VIDEO/SACD PLAYER STANDBY-ON SMART PICTURE SOUND There are many playback features and options available on Discs. After familiarizing yourself with the Player and its remote control as described on pages 17-21, see pages 22 and following to try additional features. Press STANDBY-ON to turn on the Player.

    DIM Button Press repeatedly to adjust the brightness of the Player’s display panel. There are four levels of brightness from which to choose. T -C Button Press to select “T” (Title/Track) or “C” (Chapter) in the System Menu Bar, then press 3 4 to select the Title, Track, or Chapter number you want to play.

    18 Front Panel STANDBY-ON Button Press to turn the Player on or off.The Standby light is red when the Player is in Standby mode (power off).The light does not appear if the power is on.     AC Power cord Connect to a standard AC outlet to supply power to the Player. COAXIAL (Digital Audio Out) Connect an optional audio coaxial digital cable here and to the coaxial digital Audio In jack of a Stereo. Details are on page 14.

    20 System Menu Bars Use the System Menu Bars to operate features. Press SYSTEM MENU on the remote control repeatedly to select System Menu Bar 1, System Menu Bar 2, or System Menu Bar 3. Press SYSTEM MENU again to remove all the System Menu Bars from the TV screen.

    The following symbols appear in the top left corner of the TV screen when you activate a DVD feature. Scan The first 10 seconds of each scan Chapter will play. Details are on page 28. Repeat All The entire Disc will play repeat repeatedly.

    22 Title/Disc Menus, Chapter/Track Selection Title/Disc Menus Press DISC MENU. If the current Title of the current Disc has a menu, the Title menu will appear on the screen. Otherwise, the main DVD Disc menu will appear. The menu may list camera angles, spoken language and subtitle options, Chapters for the Title, or other Disc features.

    Forward and Reverse Searching, Slow Motion 23 AUDIO CD VIDEO CD Forward and Reverse Searching On a DVD or Video CD, to search the Disc at four times the normal speed, press and hold H or G for about two seconds during playback.

    24 Still Picture/Frame-by-Frame Playback,Time Search VIDEO CD Still Picture/Frame-by-Frame Playback During playback, press PAUSE k on the remote control. A still picture will appear on the TV screen. To advance the still picture one frame at a time, press PAUSE k repeatedly. To resume normal playback, press PLAY 2.

    VIDEO CD Zoom Zooming lets you enlarge the video image during playback and pan through the enlarged image. Press ZOOM during playback. a Zoom will be selected in the System Menu Bar. Within five seconds, press 3 or 4 to choose 1.33, 2 or 4.

    26 Repeat, Repeat A-B AUDIO CD VIDEO CD Repeat You may play a Chapter,Track,Title, or entire Disc repeatedly. During playback, press REPEAT repeatedly to choose a Repeat mode. To repeat the current Chapter/Track, press REPEAT once. REPEAT CHPT or REPEAT TRK will appear on the display panel.

    Audio Language Some DVDs are recorded in different languages.You may be able to watch the same movie in French, Spanish, etc.The movie may have special audio features, such as a director’s commentary or music soundtrack. If these are available on the DVD, access the different languages or featured soundtracks by following these steps.

    28 Scan, Shuffle VIDEO CD AUDIO CD Scan Scanning plays the first 10 seconds of each Chapter/Track on the Disc. Press SCAN during playback. Starting at the beginning of the current Chapter/Track, the first 10 seconds of each Chapter/Track will play. SCAN will appear briefly on the Player’s display panel. To continue playback from a Chapter/Track, press SCAN again or press PLAY 2.

    Access Control limits viewing of Discs that exceed the limits you set.This feature will not limit viewing if the Disc manufacturer did not code the Disc. Philips cannot guarantee the availability of Access Control with all Discs, and therefore denies any liability associated with unintended watching of Discs.

    30 Access Control (cont’d) Play Once/Play Always With Play once or Play always, you can disable or enable viewing of a specific Disc.The Player memorizes settings for 120 Discs.When you select Play Always, the Disc currently in the Player moves to the top of the list.When the list is full and you add a new Disc, the last Disc in the list will drop out of the list.
  • Page 31 Setting Parental Levels DVDs may contain alternative scenes that conform to the Parental Level, or movie rating, that you select.The Parental Level may apply to the complete Disc or to certain scenes on the Disc. Follow the steps below to set the Parental Level at which you want Discs to play. Press SYSTEM MENU.

    32 Access Control (cont'd) Changing the Country If a Disc has Parental Level coding, the codings are applicable only for the country specified on the Disc.The Disc manufacturer sets these codings. For example, a Disc may be coded at Level 3 for the United States. So, for some Discs, you may need to choose the Country for which the Disc is coded in order for the Disc to play at the Parental Level you select.

    VIDEO CD Favorite Track Selection (FTS) lets you play your favorite Titles/Chapters or Tracks/Indexes in the order you select. An FTS Program can contain 20 items (Titles, Chapters, etc.). Setting a Program Press FTS while a DVD or Video CD is in the Player. c Favorite Track Selection will be selected in the System Menu Bar.

    34 Audio Programming (FTS) AUDIO CD An Audio CD Favorite Track Selection (FTS) lets you play your favorite Tracks in the order you set. An FTS Program can contain 20 Tracks. Setting a Program Put an Audio CD in the Player. Press STOP C to stop playback if necessary.

    MP3 is a compression method that makes digital music files up to 10 times smaller without losing significant sound quality. MP3 is common on the Internet, letting you transfer Tracks to your computer and onto a CD Recordable or CD Rewritable disc. Materials and equipment with which to make MP3 recordings are not supplied with this Player.

    36 Playback Control VIDEO CD Activating Playback Control (PBC) This feature is available only on Video CDs.The Video CD must be compatible with Playback Control. Check the Video CD case for details. Load a Video CD with PBC and press PLAY 2. The Video CD will show instructions or options on the TV screen.

    TV System (NTSC/PAL) DVDs are recorded according to a color system, the most common of which are NTSC and PAL. NTSC is the most common in the United States. This Player is compatible with NTSC and PAL.Your TV also operates according to a color system.

    38 Video Shift,TV Shape Video Shift Use this feature to center the picture on your TV screen, or “shift the video” from left to right. Press SYSTEM MENU. Press 4 to select , then press 2. Press 4 repeatedly to select Video shift, then press 2. Press 1 or 2 to center the picture on your TV screen.

Press 4 to select , then press 2. Press 4 repeatedly to select Monitor Type. Press 2. Press 3 or 4 to choose TV, Plasma TV, Projector, or Projection TV, then press OK.

    40 Digital Output, PCM Output Digital Output Adjust Digital output if you used one of the Player’s DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jacks (COAXIAL or OPTICAL) to connect the Player to a Stereo. Press SYSTEM MENU. Press 4 repeatedly to select G, then press 2. Digital output will be selected.

    If you connected the Player’s red and white AUDIO OUT or FRONT MULTICHANNEL AUDIO OUT jacks to a Stereo as shown on page 13, or if you connected the Player to a six-channel Receiver as shown on page 15, choose a setting for Analog Output.

    42 Clear Voice, Real Surround Clear Voice Clear Voice is a Philips-unique dialog enhancer.Turn on Clear Voice to enhance the clarity of Disc dialog (characters' speech and voice) and to position the speech toward the center of your listening space.

    CD Upsampling allows you to upsample your CD from 44.1kHz/16 bit to a higher sampling rate for superior CD sound reproduction.The selections are 88.2kHz/24bits, 176.4kHz/24bits and Off. Turn Off CD Upsampling to provide a true Stereo sound effect during playback of Audio CDs, MP3 files, or Video CDs. Press SYSTEM MENU.

    44 Speaker Settings The Player lets you adjust the speaker settings, volume balance, and delay time for your audio system.You only need to adjust the speaker settings if you used the Player’s MULTICHANNEL AUDIO OUT jacks to connect the Player to a six-channel Receiver (Dolby Digital or DTS) as shown on page 15.

    Wake-up Timer The Wake-up Timer turns on the Player within an amount of time you select. Press SYSTEM MENU. Press 2 repeatedly to select the System Menu Bar. Press 4, and 600 will appear beneath maximum number of minutes after which the Player will turn on. Press 3 or 4 repeatedly to select an amount of time, which varies from 30 minutes to 600 minutes in 30-minute increments.

    46 Karaoke Vocal, Language Karaoke Vocal Turn on Karaoke Vocal when you are playing a Disc that has multiple karaoke channels. For example, perhaps lyrics are recorded on one channel, while the music is on a separate channel. Set Karaoke Vocal to On so the multiple channels will mix together, allowing you to hear both the lyrics and the music together in normal stereo sound.
