    Playable Discs This Player will play Digital Video Discs (DVDs), Video Compact Discs (VCDs), Super Video CDs, Audio CDs, and the Audio CD layer of Super Audio CDs. This Player also plays MP3 files recorded onto a Compact Disc Recordable (CD-R) or a Compact Disc Rewritable (CD-RW). Discs having the following logos should play on this Player.

    Putting Batteries in the Remote Control Remove the battery compartment lid on the back of the remote control by pressing in the tab, then lifting off the lid. Place two AA batteries inside the battery compartment with their + and – ends aligned as indicated. Do not mix old and new batteries or different types of batteries (standard, alkaline, etc.).

    16 Quick Disc Playback There are many playback features and options available on Discs. After familiarizing yourself with the Player and its remote control as described on pages 17-19, see pages 20 and following to try additional playback fea- tures. Press POWER y y to turn on the Player.

    22 Still Picture, Time Search VIDEO CD Still Picture During playback, press PLAY/PAUSE M on the remote control once. A still picture will appear on the TV screen. PAUSE will appear in the top left corner of the TV screen. To resume normal playback, press PLAY/PAUSE M again.

    VIDEO CD Zoom Zooming lets you enlarge the video image during playback. Press ZOOM a a repeatedly during playback to select ZOOM X1.5, ZOOM X2, or ZOOM X4. Play will continue as usual, but the picture will be one-and-a-half (ZOOM X1.5), twice (ZOOM X2), or four times (ZOOM X4) as large as usual.

    24 Repeat, Repeat A-B AUDIO CD VIDEO CD Repeat You may play a Chapter, Track, Title, or Disc repeatedly. During playback, press REPEAT repeatedly to choose a Repeat mode. To repeat the current Chapter/Track, press REPEAT so CHAPTER REPEAT ON (DVD Chapter) or REP-ONE (Audio CD or Video CD Track) appears in the top left corner of the TV screen.

    Audio Language Some DVDs are recorded in different languages. You may be able to watch the same movie in French, Spanish, etc. The movie may have spe- cial audio features, such as a director’s commentary or music soundtrack. If these are available on the DVD, access the different languages or fea- tured soundtracks by following these steps.

    26 Disc Menu Language Most DVDs have a Disc menu that appears when you insert the DVD in the Player or when you press DISC MENU on the Player’s remote to access the Disc menu. The Player also refers to this as the ROOT MENU of the DVD.

    VIDEO CD AUDIO CD Favorite Track Selection (FTS) lets you play Tracks in an order you set up. The order in which you set the Tracks is called a Program. While playback is stopped, press PROGRAM FTS. PROGRAM Press the Number buttons to enter the number of the Track you want to play first.

    Parental Control limits viewing of Discs that exceed the limits you set. This feature will not limit viewing if the Disc manufacturer did not code the Disc. Philips cannot guarantee the availability of Parental Control with all Discs, and therefore denies any liability associated with unintended watching of Discs.

    Some DVD and Video CD makers code the DVD/Video CD so it will only play according to the level you set at the Player. The Parental Control level may apply to the complete Disc or to certain scenes on the Disc. Follow the steps below to set the Parental Level at which you want Discs to play.

    30 Preview, Playback Control VIDEO CD Preview Some Video CDs or Super Video CDs may contain preview or introducto- ry information. Preview will be useful when you want to go directly to a Track but cannot remember the Track number of the segment you are seeking.

    MP3 is a compression method that makes digital music files up to 10 times smaller without losing significant sound quality. MP3 is common on the Internet, letting you transfer Tracks to your computer and onto a CD Recordable or CD Rewritable disc. Materials and equipment with which to make MP3 recordings are not supplied with this Player.

    32 JPEG Playback Some CD-Rs may contain pictures in a JPEG format. For example, you may have photographic film developed by a retailer that places the pictures on a CD-R for you. These pictures may be in JPEG format. You cannot make or record such CD-Rs using this Player.

    TV Type (NTSC/PAL) DVDs are recorded according to a Color System, the most common of which are NTSC and PAL. NTSC is the most common in the United States. Your TV also operates according to a Color System. This Player is compatible with NTSC and PAL. However, in order for a DVD to play on this Player, the Color System of the DVD, the TV, and the Player should match.

    34 TV Display You may set the Player to display video in one of three formats: Letterbox, Pan & Scan, or Wide. The TV Display you select must be available on the DVD. If not, the TV Display setting will not affect the picture.

    Picture Mode Improve the clarity and stillness of the Player’s picture by adjusting Picture Mode (PIC MODE). Press SYSTEM MENU. GENERAL SETUP will be selected. Press OK. Press 9 to select PIC MODE, then press -. Press 8 or 9 to choose AUTO, HI-RES, or N-FLICKER, then press OK.

    • If you set LPCM OUTPUT to LPCM 96K, the sound may be mute if the Disc is copyright protected by the Content Scrambling System (CSS). • SPDIF is the Sony Philips Digital Interface, or a method of trans- ferring digital audio.

    Dual Mono Adjust DUAL MONO to choose whether you want to hear sound from the Disc’s left or right audio channel or both. Press SYSTEM MENU. Press 9 to select AUDIO SETUP. Press OK. Press 9 to select DUAL MONO. Press :. Press 8 or 9 to select STEREO, L-MONO, R-MONO, or MIX-MONO, then press OK.

    38 Speaker Channel Setup CHANNEL SETUP lets you select a surround sound effect or adjust the speakers you connected to the Player. If you connected the Player to a TV only or to a Stereo that is not Dolby Digital or DTS compatible, adjust the DOWNMIX setting to achieve a surround sound effect without having six speakers connected to the Player.

    When a DVD has scenes recorded from different angles, the Angle Mark will appear on the TV screen during a multi-angle scene.     40 On-Screen Display Language The Player’s System Menu is the menu you access when you press SYSTEM MENU on the remote control. This is the menu in which you set up many of the Player’s features.     Screen Saver The Screen Saver is the moving DVD logo that appears on your TV screen when Disc playback is stopped or you have not used the Player or its remote. The screen saver prevents damage to your TV screen caused by leaving a still image on the TV too long.
