  • Page 5 Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Handling Precautions The HDD is a precision device for use in reading and writing a large amount of data on or from a disk rotating at a high speed. If it is not handled carefully, either abnormal operation may result or it may not be possible to read data. The HDD is sensitive to the following items and special care is required in safeguarding against them when handling an HDD.
  • Page 6 Preventing static electricity Electrostatic discharge (ESD), which occurs when static electricity stored in the body, fabric, etc. is discharged, can destroy the laser diode in the traverse unit (optical pickup). Take care to prevent this when performing repairs. 1.3.1 Grounding to prevent damage by static electricity Static electricity in the work area can destroy the optical pickup (laser diode) in devices such as DVD players or recorder.

In prac- tice, the indicated periods will vary widely according to environmental and usage conditions. However, the indicated components should be inspected when a set is brought for ser- vice and the maintenance work performed if necessary.

  • Page 26 5.4.5 Exchanging the fitting As the fitting that comes with the service drive unit cannot be used, make sure to attach a service fitting when the drive unit is ex- changed. The fitting that is removed from the old drive unit can be attached to the new drive unit. The fitting can be removed by pulling upwards while opening out the lower part of the fitting outwards.
