Manual Exposure, No Built-In Flash
Mode (M
)
Application
This is suitable for indoor portraits and identification
shots using an external flash only. It is desirable that the
power of the external flash is adjusted beforehand, and
that the exposure compensation is used minimally.
Outline
In this mode, the built-in flash does not light. Use the
external flash connected to the FLASH jack with a
synchronization cord. The shutter speed can be selected
in the range of 1/2 to 1/1000 of a second, and the
aperture can be manually selected among the choices
according to the zoom position to be used for shooting.
Set the WHITE BALANCE manually according to the
power of the external flash.
Manual intervention
You can manually change the exposure compensation
(EV Compensation) by 2 EV towards the under and over
sides. However, if you adjust the EV Compensation
towards the high side in this mode, noise on the picture
will increase. It is desirable to adjust the power of the
external flash so that the EV Compensation stays
approximately ±0.00 EV.
For WHITE BALANCE, AUTO or a value between
3000K and 7000K is selectable. The convenient One
Push White Balance feature is effective.

Functions of the Camera

Examples

Four types of shooting environments and the
recommended settings of the camera for each
environmental condition are described here. Use these
examples as a guide when you make the settings on the
camera for your shooting conditions.
Determine the distance (L) between the subject and the
lens so that the face of the subject fills the frame
(guideline) you have set.
Shooting using only the built-in flash
This is the simplest method for using this system. As the
built-in flash has a large luminous area and its surface
treatment disperses light, the light from the flash is soft
and does not cause intense reflections from the subject,
thus minimizing unnatural bright spots. However, as the
lighting is only from the front, the pictures will tend to
be flat.
In this mode, it is not possible to eliminate shadows on
the subject. However, the shadows will be soft and will
not be very disturbing.

EV Compensation When AE AREA is set to FACE:
Usually, appropriate brightness is
obtained. However, as the
automatic exposure control
functions so that a pale skin tone
becomes darker and that a darker
skin tone becomes brighter, adjust
EV compensation as required.
When AE AREA is set to
Background:
EV Compensation is necessary
according to the background color
and the power of light of the
shadow-clearing flash. Perform a
test-shooting and adjust EV
Compensation before actual
shooting. EV Compensation
according to skin tone is not
required. Always keep the
distance between the background
and the subject constant.
