Auto Exposure, Auto Built-In Flash Mode
(A )
Application
This is the factory preset mode, and is suitable for
outdoor portrait shots. It is not suitable for shots using an
external flash or indoor shots under a fluorescent light or
video light.
Outline
In this mode, the camera measures the brightness of the
subject immediately before the photograph is taken
(upon focus lock). When the subject is bright enough,
the built-in flash does not light. The shutter speed is
automatically set to the best value between 1/1000 and
1/30 of a second. When the subject has a backlight, the
flash may light.
The built-in flash lights when the shutter speed
determined by the automatic photometry is low, which
is about 1/100 second or less with the zoom lever set to
T, and about 1/30 second or less with the zoom lever set
to W. Before the shutter works, the built-in flash lights
at a moderate level, and the camera detects the overall
lighting conditions. The camera automatically adjusts
the settings to optimal values, including exposure and
white balance, then shoots the subject.
When Exposure Mode is set to PROGRAM AUTO, the
optimal aperture and shutter speed are automatically set.
If Exposure Mode is set to APERTURE PRIORITY, the
shutter speed is automatically set according to the
aperture setting.
Manual intervention
You can manually change the exposure compensation
(EV Compensation) by 2 EV towards the under and over
sides. The center value is the optimal exposure
calculated according to the automatic photometry.
For WHITE BALANCE, a value between 3000K and
7000K is selectable. In AUTO mode, WHITE
BALANCE is automatically set according to the
automatic photometry.
The One Push White Balance feature is not available.
1 Tips
When the built-in flash flashes, indoor pictures may
have unnatural colors on portions illuminated by
external light. This is because the color temperature of
the external light greatly differs from that of the built-in
flash, which is about 5500K.
For instance, when there is a 3000K overhead light
above the subject, the shoulders, on which the light from
the built-in flash is weak and the external light is strong,
may appear yellowish in the picture. This phenomenon
occurs since the shutter speed is low; therefore, more
external light, which illuminates the shoulders more
strongly than the light from the built-in flash
illuminating the subject from the front, is received by the
camera.

Functions of the Camera
Auto Exposure, Forced Built-In Flash
Mode ( )
Applications
This mode is suitable for indoor portraits and
identification shots. It is not suitable for shots using an
external flash. However, this mode is suitable when
using a shadow-clearing flash connected to the camera
with a synchronization cord.
Outline
In this mode, the shutter speed is fixed at 1/250 second.
The built-in flash lights, regardless of the condition of
the subject. Before the shutter works, the built-in flash
lights at a moderate level, and the camera then detects
the overall lighting conditions. The camera
automatically adjusts the settings to optimal values,
including exposure and white balance, then shoots the
subject.
When Exposure Mode is set to PROGRAM AUTO, the
optimal aperture and shutter speed are automatically set.
If Exposure Mode is set to APERTURE PRIORITY, the
shutter speed is automatically set according to the
aperture setting.
Manual intervention
You can manually change the exposure compensation
(EV Compensation) by 2 EV towards the under and over
sides. The center value is the optimal exposure
calculated according to the automatic photometry.
For WHITE BALANCE, a value between 3000K and
7000K is selectable. Set the white balance manually
when you wish to change the hue of a picture. Because
the reference color temperature of the built-in flash is
about 5500K, when a value of 5000K or less is selected,
the picture will become bluish, and when a value of
6000K or more is selected, the picture will become
reddish.
In AUTO mode, WHITE BALANCE is automatically
set according to the automatic photometry. The
convenient One Push White Balance feature is effective.
1 Tips
This mode is designed to allow easy shooting of indoor
portraits and identification shots. Before the shutter is
tripped, the built-in flash lights at a moderate power, and
the camera detects the overall lighting conditions.
Therefore, when using an external shadow-clearing
flash, connect it to the camera with a synchronization
cord. A slave-type shadow-clearing flash, which reacts
to the light from the main flash, cannot be used, except
for one that can support the preflash function. If you use
a slave-type shadow-clearing flash that does not support
the preflash function, use manual exposure and forced
built-in flash mode.
