Electric Starter System
Starter Motor Removal
Regulator/Rectifier (see Regulator/Rectifier Removal)
Front Cross Pipe [B]
Drain the engine oil (see Engine Oil Change in the Peri-
odic Maintenance chapter).
Remove the starter motor cable nut [A] and the mounting
Pull out the starter motor [C].
Starter Motor Installation
Do not tap the starter motor shaft or body. Tapping
the shaft or body could damage the motor.
When installing the starter motor, clean the starter mo-
tor legs [A] and crankcase [B] where the starter motor is
Replace the O-ring with a new one.
Apply a small amount of grease to the O-ring.
Torque - Starter Motor Mounting Bolts: 9.8 N·m (1.0 kgf·m,
Starter Motor Cable Terminal Nut: 5.9 N·m (0.60
Pour in the specified type and amount of oil (see Engine
Oil Change in the Periodic Maintenance chapter).

Take off the starter motor through bolts [A] and remove
both end covers [B] and pull the armature out of the yoke
