Valve Clearance Adjustment
Remove the camshaft [A].
Remove the valve lifter [B] of the applicable valve.
Remove the shim [C] from the top of the spring retainer.
OMark and record the valve lifter and shim locations so
they can be reinstalled in their original positions.
Measure the thickness of the removed shim.
Select an appropriate shim from the Valve Clearance Ad-
justment Chart and replace it with the removed shim.
o If there is no valve clearance, use a shim that is a few
sizes smaller, and remeasure the valve clearance.
o The shim must be installed with its thickness indication
[A] facing the retainer. At this time, apply grease to the
shim or to the retainer to prevent the shim from falling
off during the operation.
the camshafts. Be sure to time the camshafts prop-
erly (see Camshaft Installation)
Remeasure any valve clearance that was adjusted.
Readjust if necessary.
Do not put shim stock under the shim. This may
cause the shim to pop out high rpm, causing exten-
sive engine damage.
Do not grind the shim. This may cause it to fracture,
causing extensive engine damage.
