Warning:
This unit is equipped with an internal combustion engine and should not be used on or near any unimproved forest-
covered, brush-covered or grass-covered land unless the engine's exhaust system is equipped with a spark arrester meeting
applicable local or state laws (if any). If a spark arrester is used, it should be maintained in effective working order by the operator.
In the State of California the above is required by law (Section 4442 of the California Public Resources Code). Other states may have

Please read and understand what it says. Before you start assembling your new equipment, please locate the model plate on the equipment and copy the information from it in the space provided below.

    SECTION 1: IMPORTANT SAFE OPERATION PRACTICES WARNING: This symbol points out important safety instructions which, if not followed, could endanger the personal safety and/or property of yourself and others. Read and follow all instructions in this manual before attempting to operate this machine. Failure to comply with these instructions may result in personal injury.
  • Page 4: Slope Operation

    Shut the engine off and wait until the blade comes to a complete stop before removing the grass catcher or unclogging the chute. The cutting blade continues to rotate for a few seconds after the engine is shut off. Never place any part of the body in the blade area until you are sure the blade has stopped rotating.
  • Page 5 General Service: Never run an engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated area. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless and deadly gas. Before cleaning, repairing, or inspecting, make certain the blade and all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine to prevent unintended starting.

    SECTION 2: SLOPE GAUGE Use this page as a guide to determine slopes where you may not operate safely. Do not operate your lawn mower on such slopes.

    See Figure 3. Disconnect Spark Plug Wire Before setting up your lawn mower, disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Ground it against the engine by attaching the rubber boot to a bolt or the metal clip to the retaining post or the V-slot on the engine.
  • Page 8 Mulching Baffle (If so Equipped) A mulching kit is available for the mowers shown in this manual. To obtain a mulching kit, contact a local MTD Products parts and service dealer . If your mower is equipped with the optional mulching baffle, refer to Figure 7 and install as follows.

    Chute Deflector Read this operator’s manual and safety rules before operating your lawn mower. Compare the illustration in Figure 8 with your lawn mower to familiarize yourself with the location of various controls and adjustments. Save this manual for future reference.

    Using Your Lawn Mower Be sure that the lawn is clear of stones, sticks, wire, or other objects which could damage the lawn mower or engine. Such objects could be accidently thrown by the mower in any direction and cause serious personal injury to the operator and others.
  • Page 11: Making Adjustments

    Changing of the engine’s governed speed will void the engine’s warranty. • The warranty on this lawn mower does not cover items that have been subjected to operator abuse or negligence. To receive full value from the warranty, the operator must maintain the lawn mower as instructed in this manual.
  • Page 12 Blade Control Handle Lube Lube Lube Figure 12 Lubrication WARNING: Always stop the engine, discon- nect the spark plug wire, and ground it against the engine before cleaning, lubricating or doing any type of maintenance on the machine. Blade Control Handle: Lubricate the pivot points on the blade control handle at least once a season with light oil.

    Sharpening the Blade When sharpening the blade, follow the original angle of grind as a guide. It is extremely important that each cutting edge receives an equal amount of grinding to prevent an unbalanced blade. An unbalanced blade will cause excessive vibration when rotating at high speeds.

    SECTION 10: TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE Trouble Possible Cause(s) Engine fails to start Blade control handle disengaged. Spark plug wire disconnected. Fuel tank empty, or stale fuel. Blocked fuel line. Faulty spark plug. Engine flooded. Engine runs erratic Spark plug wire loose. Blocked fuel line or stale fuel.
