BATTERY CHARGING CIRCUIT 16
BATTERY VOLTAGE
Place, with the engine running, the red lead of the voltmeter on the
positive (+) terminal of the battery and the black lead on the negative (-).
Charge with battery at rest: 12 ÷ 13 V
If the meter shows a reading of under 11 V, check the charging circuit
connections.
BATTERY CHARGING
If the specific gravity of the electrolyte is low, the battery needs to be
charged. Always use a slow charge, never a quick charge.
Remove battery caps.
Connect the charger's positive (+) cable to the battery's positive (+) post;
connect the charger's negative (-) cable to the battery's negative (-) post.
Charge the battery until the specific gravity reaches 1.290 at 20°C with a
charging current of 1.4 A max.
The voltmeter indicator must remain still for at least 1 hour after charging.
Periodically check the electrolyte level; wash the battery with water after
charging.
Note: The battery's electrolyte contains sulphuric acid. Always protect
the eyes, skin and clothes. If electrolyte gets on the skin or in the eyes,
wash thoroughly with water (for eyes, also seek qualified medical advice).
BATTERY REMOVAL
Remove seat
Remove the battery securing rubber band (fig. 1).
Disconnect the negative and then the positive terminals.
Remove the battery.
Battery inspection
Check each element with a hydrometer.
Specific gravity: 1.270 ÷ 1.290 at 20°C.
If the specific gravity is under 1.230 the battery must be charged; specific
gravity varies according to temperature.
Replace battery if there is sulfation and if the space between the plates is
full of sediment.
BATTERY REINSTALLATION
Install the battery in it's compartment in the frame.
Connect the positive (+) cable to the battery's positive (+) post; connect
the negative (-) cable to the battery's negative (-) post.
Block the battery with the securing rubber.
Apply some clean grease to the battery terminals.
Place the battery breather tube in its original position.
Mount the seat.
