TECHNICAL FEATURE

ELECTRONIC CONTROL OF N/D CLUTCH

The N/D clutch can be shifted into neutral or drive mode at the rider's w ill, w ith the N/D select switch. This system is
equipped with an electronic fail-safe function to prevent shifting the N/D clutch w ithout the rider's input, in the event of
accidental switch operation or low oil level.

Fail-safe function when oil level is low

This system monitors the oil level with the transmission oil pressure sensor and oil level switch. When a low oil level is
detected, the system w ill notify the rider of a problem and the fail-safe function operates as follows:
• Oil level is low (below 3.6 liter)
- The oil pressure indicator w ill go ON when low oil level has been detected.
• Oil level is low (below 3.0 liter)
- The oil pressure indicator w ill go ON and w ill indicate the HFT trouble code (blink
N/D clutch to neutral.
NOTE:
• When the motorcycle is inclined, in the event of being parked on a slope, the oil level switch may detect a low oil level,
causing the oil pressure indicator to illuminate.

Detecting condition of the oil level

When the ignition switch is turned ON, the TCM confirms that the oil level switch is ON or OFF to detect the engine oil
level.
Oil level detection is only performed at the moment when the ignition switch is turned ON and the sidestand is retracted
(sidestand switch is closed). The condition under which the oil level is detected is that the oil temperature is 50°C (120°F)
minim um when the ignition switch is turned OFF and it has been four minutes or more since the ignition switch has been
turned OFF and the current oil temperature is 35°C (95°F).
The TCM cannot detect the oil level if the engine is started w ith the sidestand lowered.
If the motorcycle has been repeatedly ridden for 2,500 km w ithout detecting the oil level, "OIL" w ill be indicated in the trip
meter as a warning to the rider.

Fail-safe for a N/D shift problem

The TCM w ill stop the engine by stopping fuel injection when detecting the follow ing conditions that would cause the N/D
clutch system not to work.
• When detecting the solenoid lock (the N/D select switch position does not match the condition of the neutral switch
position)
• When detecting a malfunction of the neutral switch
2-16
the system w ill also switch the
