Chapter 5:
Troubleshooting
Procedures
The troubleshooting process
This chapter identifies the source of common problems that may occur with the
RIP Station 5000 and suggests ways of correcting them.
The troubleshooting process
The troubleshooting process is designed to eliminate the most obvious causes of failure
before progressing to more complex issues. "Where problems occur" on page 5-2 gives an
overview of the RIP Station 5000 system and indicates areas most likely to require
troubleshooting.
• Problems with initial installation
If the RIP Station 5000 fails to complete its first startup and reach the Idle (ready to
print) screen, the most likely cause is a loose cable or board connection. See "Accessing
internal components" on page 4-3 for instructions on opening the RIP Station 5000
chassis, and "Checking internal connections" on page 4-8 for descriptions of
RIP Station 5000 parts and connections.
If a loose part or cable is not the cause of the problem, see "Checking the
RIP Station 5000 as a stand-alone unit" on page 5-6, and "Checking the entire
RIP Station 5000 system" on page 5-19.
• Try a phone check before you go to the customer site
"Before you go to the customer site" on page 5-3 suggests areas you should check out
before making a service call to the customer site. With a phone call you can find out if
the problem is a simple operating failure or a failure caused by a network or
configuration change. You can ask the customer to check for loose cables on the back
of the RIP Station 5000 and loose connections at a power strip or outlet.
• Check for obvious causes of problems
"Preliminary on-site checkout" on page 5-4 takes you through the initial visual
checkouts you should make when you arrive at the customer site. You should check the
RIP Station 5000 internally and externally for the most common problems such as
loose cables, connectors, and boards.
• Check the RIP Station 5000 as a stand-alone unit.
"Checking the RIP Station 5000 as a stand-alone unit" on page 5-6 describes the
checks you should perform on the RIP Station 5000 if the initial checks fail to identify
the cause of a problem. With the RIP Station 5000 disconnected from the printer
copier and the network, test the RIP Station 5000 as a stand-alone unit.
This section describes possible startup errors and explains how to run and interpret
RIP Station 5000 diagnostics.
• Check the entire RIP Station 5000 system.
