The negative corona of the primary charging
assembly

photosensitive drum to a uniform negative
potential, establishing primary potential.
Since the surface potential of the charged
photosensitive drum is determined by the potential
of the grid, a bias is applied to the grid to ensure a
specific drum surface potential.

Dark area
A laser beam of an intensity suited to the
the
image density of the original is directed to the
surface of the photosensitive drum, thereby
neutralizing the charges on the surface. Such
areas are called the light areas of the
photosensitive drum and will later attract toner in
step 4 (development).
