    Getting started Unlocking The “Getting started” section provides an overview of the vehicle’s most basic func- tions.     Enter the vehicle and insert the SmartKey in the starter switch. Opening a door causes its window to open slightly. It will fully close when the door is shut. A side window will not work if it is blocked with ice or if the battery needs charging. If you cannot shut a door, do not force it or you could damage the door or the side window.

  • Page 41 The SmartKey can only be removed from the starter switch with the gear selector lever in position P. If the SmartKey cannot be turned in the starter switch, the starter battery may not be sufficiently charged. Check the starter battery and charge it if necessary ( page 427).
  • Page 42 Getting started Unlocking Ignition (or Position 2) Press the KEYLESS-GO start/stop but- ton twice. This supplies power for all electrical consumers. All lamps (except high beam headlamp indicator lamp and turn signal indicator lamps unless activated) in the instru- ment cluster come on. If a lamp in the instrument cluster fails to come on when the ignition is switched on, have it checked and replaced if necessary.

    Adjusting Warning! All seat, head restraint, steering wheel, and rear view mirror adjustments, as well as fas- tening of seat belts, must be done before the vehicle is put into motion.     Getting started Driving Warning! Make sure that absolutely no objects are obstructing the pedal’s range of movement. Keep the driver’s footwell clear of all obsta- cles. If there are any floormats or carpets in the footwell, make sure the pedals still have sufficient clearance.
  • Page 51 Warning! Never let more people ride in the vehicle than there are seat belts available. Be sure everyone riding in the vehicle is correctly restrained with a separate seat belt. Never use a seat belt for more than one person at a time.
  • Page 52 Do not bleach or dye seat belts as this may severely weaken them. In a crash, they may not be able to provide adequate protection. Damaged seat belts or seat belts that were highly stressed in an accident must be replaced. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

    Starting the engine Warning! Inhalation of exhaust gas is hazardous to your health. All exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide (CO), and inhaling it can cause un- consciousness and possible death. Do not run the engine in confined areas (such as a garage) which are not properly ventilated.
  • Page 54 Getting started Driving Starting with KEYLESS-GO* Warning! As long as the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO is in your vehicle, the vehicle can be started. Therefore, never leave children unattended in the vehicle, as they could otherwise accidentally start the engine.     Unburned gasoline may have entered the catalytic converter and damaged it. Give very little gas. Have the problem repaired by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center as soon as possible. The coolant temperature gauge is above 248°F (120°C) The coolant is too hot and is no longer cooling the engine.

    Getting started Parking and locking You have now completed your first drive. You have properly stopped and parked your vehicle. End your drive as follows. Warning! With the engine not running, there is no power assistance for the brake and steering systems.

    Parking brake Warning! Engaging the parking brake while the vehicle is in motion can cause the rear wheels to lock up. You could lose control of the vehicle and cause an accident. In addition, the vehicle’s brake lights do not light up when the parking brake is engaged.

    This can damage the seat belt and impair the effectiveness of the seat belt, and/or cause damage to the door and/or door trim panel. Such damage is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty. Damaged seat belts must be replaced. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

    Locking Warning! To prevent possible personal injury, always keep hands and fingers away from the door openings when closing the doors. Be espe- cially careful when small children are around. Before closing doors, make sure that there is no possibility of someone getting caught in a door during closing.

    Add premixed coolant solution only. Adding water and MB 325.0 Anticorrosion/Antifreeze separately from each other, could cause engine damage not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty. If the antifreeze mixture is effective to -35°F (-37°C), the boiling point of the cool- ant in the pressurized cooling system is reached at approximately 266°F (130°C).
  • Page 465 Before the start of the winter season (or once a year in hot southern regions), you should have the anticorrosion/antifreeze concentration checked. The coolant is also regularly checked each time you bring your vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center for service.
