    If you believe that your vehicle has a defect which could cause a crash or could cause injury or death, you should immediately inform the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in addition to notifying Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. If NHTSA receives similar complaints, it may open an investigation, and if it finds that a safety defect exists in a group of vehicles, it may order a recall and remedy campaign.

    Getting started Adjusting Warning! All seat, steering wheel, and rear view mirror adjustments, as well as fastening of seat belts, must be done before the vehicle is put into motion. Seats Warning! Do not adjust the driver’s seat while driving. Adjusting the seat while driving could cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

    Seat fore and aft adjustment Slide the switch forwards or backwards in the direction of arrow 1. Adjust seat to a comfortable seating position that still allows you to reach the accelerator/brake pedal safely. The position should be as far rearward as possible, consistent with ability to properly operate controls.

  • Page 48 A child’s risk of serious or fatal injuries is significantly increased if the child restraints are not properly secured in the vehicle and the child is not properly secured in the child restraint. Warning! Never ride in a moving vehicle with the seat backrest in an excessively reclined position as this can be dangerous.
  • Page 49 Do not bleach or dye seat belts as this may severely weaken them. In a crash, they may not be able to provide adequate protection. Damaged seat belts or belts that were highly stressed in an accident must be replaced. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

    Starting the engine Warning! Inhalation of exhaust gas is hazardous to your health. All exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide, and inhaling it can cause uncon- sciousness and possible death. Do not run the engine in confined areas (such as garage) which are not properly ven- tilated.

With the engine not running, there is no power assistance for the brake and steering system. Only during these types of impacts, if of sufficient severi- ty to meet the deployment threshold, will they provide their supplemental protection.

The passenger lap-shoulder belt has a spe- cial seat belt retractor for the secure fas- tening of child restraints.

    The Brake Assist System (BAS) operates in emergency situations. If you apply the brakes very quickly, the BAS automatically provides full brake boost thereby potential- ly reducing the braking distance. Apply continuous full braking pressure until the emergency braking situation is over. The ABS will prevent the wheels from locking.

    Performance enhancement system Airbrake The Airbrake enhances the vehicle’s driv- ing stability. It adapts the aerodynamics of the vehicle to the driving conditions ac- cording to the speed and the mode set. This is achieved using a moveable spoiler. The Airbrake is located at the rear edge of the trunk lid.

With the ignition on, the Airbrake swings upwards to an angle of 5° and then returns to its initial position. When the vehicle exceeds a speed of 60 mph (95 km/h), the Airbrake swings up to an angle of 10°.

    Safety and Security Anti-theft systems Tow-away alarm Once the tow-away alarm is armed, a visual and audible alarm will be triggered when someone attempts to raise the vehicle. The tow-away protection alarm is triggered, for example, if the vehicle is lifted on one side.
  • Page 94 Switch off the ignition and remove the SmartKey. You cannot disarm the tow-away alarm while the ignition is switched on. Press button 1. Indicator lamp 2 in button 1 comes on briefly.
