Temperature.Pressure Relief Valve
AWARNING
At the time of manufacture this water heater was provided
with a combination tomperature-prassuresreliefvalvecertified
by a nationally recognizedtesting laboratorythat maintains
periodicinspection of production of listedequipmentor mute-
rials, as meeting the requirements for Relief Valves and
AutomaticGasShutoff Devices for Hot Water Supply Systems,
and the latest edition ef ANSI 7.21.22and the code require-
ments ef ASME. If replaced, the valvemustmeet the requir_
rnents ef localcedes, but not lessthan a combination tempera.
tore and pressure relief valvecertifiedas meeting the require-
meritsfor ReliefValvesand Automatic GasShutoffDevices for
Hot Water Supply Systems, A NSI 7.21.22bya nationally recog-
nized testinglaboratorythat maintains periodicinspec_on of
production oflistedequipment, or meterl:als,
The valvemust be markedwith a rna_mum set pressure not
to exceed the marked hydrostaticworking pressureof the
water heater (150 II_/sq. in.) and a discharge capacity not less
thanthe water heater inputrate ..as s hownon the modelrating
plate. (Electric heaters- watts drvidedby 1000 x 3415 equal
BTU/Hr. rate.)
Yourlocaljurisdictional authority, w hilemandating the useof a
temperature-pressure r elief valvecomplying with ANSI 7.21.22
and ASME, may requirea valvemodel diiferentfrom the one
furnished with the waterheater.
Compliance with suchlocalrequirements mustbe satisfied by
the installeror end userof the water heaterwith a locally pre-
scribed temperature-pressure r elief valveinstalled in the desig-
nated openingin the water heater in placeof the factoryfur-
nishedvalve.
For safeoperationofthe water heater, the relief valvemustnot
be removed from it'sdesignated opening or plugged.
The tempe.ratere-pressore relief valvemustbe installed directly
intothe fittingof thewater heaterdesignated f orthe re,el valve.
Position the valvedownward andprovidetubing sothat any dis-!
chargewill exit onlywithin 6 inchesabove,or at anydistance
belowthe structuralfloor.Be certainthat no contactis madeI
with anylive electrical p art. The discharge o pening mustnot be
blockedor reduced in sizeunder any circumstances. Excessive
length, over 30 feet, or useof more than fourelbowscancause
restriction andreducethe discharge c apacity ofthe valve.
No valveor otherobstru_ionis to be placed between the relief
valveand the tank. Do not connecttubing directlyto discharge
drainunless a 6"air gapisprovided. Toprevent b odilyinjury, h as-
arcl t o life,or propertydamage,the relief valvemustbe allowed
to discharge w ater in quantities should circumstances demand. I f
the discharge pipeis not connected to a drainor othersuitable
means,the waterflowmaycause propertydamage.
The Discharge Pipe:
Must not be smallerin sizethan the outlet pipesize of the
valve,or haveanyreducing couplings o r other restrictions,
Mustnot be pluggedor blocked.
Mustbe of materiallistedfor hot water distribution.
Must be installedso as to allowcompletedrainageof beth
the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the discharge
pipe.
Mustterminateat an adequatedrain.
• Mustnot haveanyvalvebetweenthe relief valveandtank.
AWARNING
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be manually
operated ut least once a year. Caution shouldbe taben to
ensurethat (I) no one is in front ef or aroundthe outfot of
!the temper_ure-peessurereliefvalve discharge line, and (2)
the water manually discharged will not causeany bodily
njury or property damage because the water may be
iextremely h ot
If after manually operating the valve, it fails to completely
ireset and continuesto releasewater, immediatelydose the
cold water inlet to the water heater, follow the draining
instructions, and replace the temperature-pressure relief
valvewlth a newone.
