  • Page 12 Daily Append Rotation Type You cannot edit the properties of the daily backups, they are always incremental. But you can edit some of the properties of the weekly backup, such as the Day of week when it occurs. The Number of rotation sets corresponds to the number of media sets that you wish to use.
  • Page 13: Overview

Overview Chapter 2: Scheduled Jobs and Rotation Sets Overview Whenever a backup job is created; the database automatically creates the corresponding media folders within the backup job folder. This ensures that the link between the job and the media is always visible. It is particularly useful when a rotation schedule has been defined for a job because the default folder names reflect the rotation sets.
  • Page 14: Rotation Folders

Rotation Folders Rotation Folders Whenever a rotation schedule is defined; the database builds the rotation set folders right away. This allows the user to see what media the job will be requesting; it also allows the user to populate these set folders ahead of time if migrating from another rotation. If the rotation type is changed, the set folders are updated to reflect the new rotation type.
  • Page 15: Guidelines On Using Run Next Schedule

Scheduling Commands • Pause schedule: This command is available whenever a job is scheduled; it prevents the schedule from proceeding. This option is available at all times; the job does not have to be running. It allows a user to prevent a job from running again, without having to wait for the next schedule to start.
  • Page 16: Rotation Details

Rotation Details Rotation Details Initial Rotation Job The initial rotation job is always at the highest level. This is the instance of a job with the longest retention period. In the Daily Append example, the backup job will automatically schedule and configure the Weekly Set 1 Rotation to run first and back up the data to the Weekly Set 1 Media folder.
  • Page 17 Rotation Details Next rotation set: This is the rotation set that the job will use for backup the next time it is scheduled to run, or the next time the “Run next schedule” option is selected. Overview Chapter 3: Working With Tape Libraries Please note that this is a replacement chapter for the current Tape Library chapter in the User and Technical Reference Guide. New information includes: • Element status on page 19 • Barcode Filters on page 21 •...
  • Page 19: Adding The Data Protector Express Drive Expansion License

Viewing a Tape Library Each machine that has a tape library attached to it requires a Data Protector Express Media Server license. The Data Protector Express Backup Server includes the Data Protector Express Media Server capability. Multiple tape libraries can be connected to the Data Protector Express Backup Server and the Data Protector Express Media Servers.
  • Page 20: Devices

Viewing a Tape Library TIP: Click on Devices in the Favorites desk bar and navigate down from the Network folder to locate Devices. For a hierarchical view, open Folders in the Detail Area (by clicking on the Folders icon in the Toolbar). Devices The tape drives in a tape library are viewed and managed in the same way as stand-alone tape drives.
  • Page 21: Element Status

Viewing a Tape Library NOTE: It can take a long time to inventory the tape media in a tape library, which is why Data Protector Express usually performs a “light inventory” rather than running an identify job on all the slots in a loader. See the “Inventory Process” section below for more information.
  • Page 22: Barcodes And Cartridge Memory

Viewing a Tape Library Barcodes and Cartridge Memory If the tape library supports barcode and/or cartridge memory, the details are added to the Data Protector Express catalog. The barcode information is hidden by default; to display this detail, right-click anywhere in the column title row to see available column headings and click on Media barcode to make the barcode information visible in the slots view.
  • Page 23: Barcode Filters

Viewing a Tape Library Barcode Filters The barcode filter allows users to control access to media by barcode. The user can specify ranges, wildcards, or explicit barcodes that either include or exclude media for use by the product. This property only applies to libraries. Stand alone devices are not restricted in any way by it.
  • Page 24: To Set Barcode Filters For A Job

Viewing a Tape Library To set barcode filters for a job Barcode filters may easily be assigned from the Job Properties. (If you are using a wizard to create the job, you must edit the properties after the job has been created.) Select the Barcode Filter page.
  • Page 25 Viewing a Tape Library In the following example, all LTO-3 (L3) media with a volume identifier that starts with 79 will be selected. Click either the Exclude or the Include button, as appropriate. • Add a range of barcodes: This filter allows you to specify a range of volume identifiers and media identifiers to include.
  • Page 26: Initialization Process

Viewing a Tape Library • Add barcodes from media present in the library: This filter displays a list of all libraries and their elements. Select the required barcodes from the list and click either the Exclude or the Include button, as appropriate. Initialization Process The traditional loader inventory mechanism is accomplished by running an identify job on all the slots in a library.
  • Page 27: Barcodes And The Identify Job

Media Management may be chosen for use in a job. This means that if a user is using barcodes with their tape library, they will almost never need to run an identification job. When the job loads the tape it makes sure that the tape is really what the catalog says it is and, if necessary, updates the catalog to indicate what is really there.
  • Page 28: Sort Media

Media Management When you create the job, you can specify which slots should contain the imported media and any password and encryption details. NOTE: If the media has been encrypted, you will only be able to use it if you can provide the encryption passphrase.
  • Page 29: Backups And Rotation Types

Backups and Rotation Types Backups and Rotation Types One benefit of using Data Protector Express with tape libraries is the ease with which you can schedule different backups for different days of the week/month/year. Use the appropriate backup wizard to create your backup job, as described earlier in the User Guide.
  • Page 30: A Note About Streaming

Backups and Rotation Types If this retention policy is over-cautious for your needs, simply select Custom as the Rotation type to make the GFS-30 model editable. You can then change the number of sets and edit the write mode, if required, by clicking on the appropriate interval button. Rotation types are described in more detail in the User Guide.
  • Page 31: Chapter 4: Backup Copy Policy

Overview Chapter 4: Backup Copy Policy Overview The backup copy policy is a feature of the D2D2Any option that allows automatic creation, configuration, and scheduling of copy jobs for media created by a backup job. When used with a rotation, this provides great flexibility for extending duplication of media for a wide variety of use cases, such as copying a weekly backup to tape for off site storage.
  • Page 32 Configuring a Copy Policy If a rotation schedule has been created for the backup job, the most frequent job to which the copy policy can be assigned is the daily rotation. The following example shows a Simple-6 rotation type with weekly and monthly copies. Daily backups are not selected and not copied.

  • Page 37: Running A Copy Job And The Resulting Folder Structure

Running a Copy Job and the Resulting Folder Structure If a rotation is not defined, the Assign policy section will only show one instance of the backup job; all the media created when the backup job is run will be copied, if the copy policy is assigned to this instance.
  • Page 38 Running a Copy Job and the Resulting Folder Structure If you also look at the Job Status page, you will see that the original backup job and the copy job are listed separately because they are two jobs. This is useful because it allows you to select the copy job, open its Properties page, make amendments to the copy policy and rerun the copy job independently of the backup job.
  • Page 39: Copy Media And Folder Structure

Running a Copy Job and the Resulting Folder Structure Copy Media and Folder Structure All media folders are created automatically under the backup job to which they relate. Jobs with a rotation schedule have a Rotation Media folder with sub-folders for each of the rotation sets.

Post Execution Commands • Command to execute if job completes with no error: This command will execute if the job completes with no final error. A job can complete with no error, even if all hosts are offline. This does not mean that anything was backed up, it just means that the job was not cancelled, or there wasn’t some other major problem executing the job.
