The characteristics of these alternatives correspond to original IR POE 32. These may
also be mixed with the original lubricant, within the corresponding viscosity group. It is
assumed these alternatives have moisture content less than 50 ppm.
The Use of POE Lubricants with Chlorinated (H)CFC Refrigerants
(R22 etc.)
POE lubricants may also be used with HCFC refrigerants, to simplify a subsequent
conversion to chlorine free refrigerant. POE lubricants are basically suitable for such
applications,
however; an increased risk exists regarding compressor wear and chemical
stability of the system. A qualified conversion from mineral oil to POE requires repeated
lubricant changes due to the unavoidable contamination of oil with chlorine from the
HCFC refrigerant.
The use of POE lubricants with HCFC refrigerants should be carefully considered
especially regarding the following:
When operating with HCFC, the amount of refrigerant dissolved in the POE
lubricant is more than double compared to conventional lubricants. This results in
a large reduction in viscosity, especially with high suction pressure and low
lubricant temperature, and this reduced viscosity may increase wear
Ester lubricants are strongly hygroscopic and require a high degree of dehydration
(<50 ppm) when used with HCFC refrigerants. Due to the chlorine content of
HCFC's, this level of dehydration can only be achieved with considerable effort.
Excessive moisture content leads to hydrolysis and acid formation with copper
plating resulting in damage to the compressor.
Ester lubricants have good solubility behavior with regard to system deposits and
therefore increase the danger of damage to the compressor due to loosened dirt.
Resulting Requirements
For air conditioning (H-range) and liquid injection cooling with single stage
compressors, the use of a POE lubricant with a higher basic viscosity is needed.
