    TRACTOR SET-UP Moving The Tractor Manually Yourtractor'stransmissionis equippedwith a hydrostaticreliefvalve for occasionswhenit is necessaryto movethe tractormanually.Open- ing this valve permitsthe fluidin the transmission to bypassits normal route,allowingthe rear tiresto "freewheel." T oopen the hydrostatic reliefvalve,proceedas follows: Locatethe hydrostaticbypassrod in the rear of thetractor.See Figure1.

Whenattachingbatterycables,alwaysconnectthe POSiTiVE(Red) wire to its terminalfirst, followedbythe NEGATIVE (Black) wire. For shippingreasons,bothbatterycableson yourequipmentmay havebeenleft disconnected from theterminalsat the factory.To connectthe batterycables,proceedas follows: NOTE:The positivebatteryterminalis markedPos.(+).   • Page 12 Setting the Deck Gauge Wheels Movethe tractoron a firm and levelsurface,preferablypavement, a nd proceedas follows Selectthe heightpositionof the cuttingdeck byplacingthedeck lift leverinthe normallydesiredmowingheightsetting(anyof the elevendifferentcuttingheightnotcheson the rightfender). Checkthe gauge wheelsforcontactor excessiveclearancewith the surfacebelow.Thedeck gauge wheelsshouldhavebetween l_-inchand Y2-inch clearanceabovethe ground. If the gauge wheelshaveexcessiveclearanceor contactwith the surface,adjust as follows: Raisethe deck lift handleto itshighest setting.

Touse, movethe lever to the left,then placein the notchbest suitedfor yourapplication. IGNITION SWITCH MODULE Tostart theengine,insert t he key into the ignition switchand turnclockwise to the START position.Releasethe key intothe NORMAL M OWING MODE positiononcethe enginehas fired.

NOTE:The PTO/BladeEngageknobmustbe in the disengaged(OFF)positionwhenstartingthe engine.     SAFETY iNTERLOCK SWITCH ES This tractoris equippedwith a safetyinterlock s ystemfor the protection of the operator.If the interlocksystemshouldevermalfunction,do not operatethe tractor.Contacta Searsor otherqualifiedservicedealer. • The safetyinterlocksystempreventstheenginefrom crankingor startingunlessthe parkingbrakeis engaged,and the PTO(Blade Engage)knobis in thedisengaged(OFF)position. Theenginewill automaticallyshut off if theoperatorleavesthe seat beforeengagingthe parkingbrake.

    REVERSE CAUTION MODE The REVERSE CAUTIONMODEpositionof thekey switch module allowsthe tractorto be operatedin reversewith the blades(PTO) engaged. NOTE: Mowingin reverseis not recommended. Use extremecautionwhile operatingthe tractorin the REVERSE CAUTIONMODE.Alwayslookdownand behindbeforeand while backing.Do notoperatethe tractorwhenchildrenor othersare around.Stopthe tractorimmediately if someoneentersthearea. Touse the REVERSE CAUTIONMODE: NOTE:The operatorMUSTbe seatedin the tractorseat.

    Cruise Control Neverengagethe cruise controlleverwhiletravelingin reverse. Toset the cruisecontrol: Slowlypressthe upper portionof thedrive pedalwith your right foot untilthe desiredspeedisachieved. Lightlypressthe parkingbrake/cruisecontrolleverdownward and hold it in that position. Removeyour footfrom the drive pedal. Releasepressurefromthe parkingbrake/cruisecontrollever Aftercompletingstep 3, the drivepedal shouldremainin the down positionand thetractorwill maintainthe same forwardspeed.If it doesn't,the cruisecontrol is not engaged.Repeatsteps 1 through4 to engagethecruise control.

CUTTING DECK REMOVAL To removethecuttingdeck, proceedas follows: Placethe PTO/BladeEngageknobin the disengaged(OFF) positionand engagethe parkingbrake. Lowerthe deck by movingthe deck lift leverintothe bottomnotch on the rightfender. Locatethe PTOclutchunderthe frontof yourtractor.See Figure10.

  • Page 23 Toproperlysharpenthe cuttingblades,removeequal amounts of metalfrom both endsof the bladesalong the cuttingedges, parallelto thetrailingedge,at a 250to 300angle.Alwaysgrind eachcuttingbladeedge equallyto maintainproper bladebalance. See Figure19. If the cuttingedge of the bladehas previouslybeen sharpened,or if any metal separationis present,replacethe bladeswith newones. A poorlybalancedblade willcause excessivevibration,may cause damageto the tractorand/or result in personalinjury.

    FUSE Beforeservicing,repairing,or inspecting, alwaysdisengagePTO (BladeEngageknob), set parkingbrake,stop engineand remove to preventunintendedstarting. A fuse isinstalled in yourtractor'swiringharnessto protectthe trac- tor'selectricalsystemfrom damagecausedbyexcessiveamperage. If the electricalsystemdoesnot function,or yourtractor'senginewill notcrank,first checkto be certain that the fuse hasnot blown.It is locatedunderthe hood,mountedbehindthe top of the dashpanel on the supportbar.
  • Page 25 Front Wheels Eachof the front wheelaxles and rimsisequippedwith a grease fitting. See Figure21.Lubricatewith a No.2 multi-purpose grease appliedwith a greasegun after every25 hoursof tractoroperation. Deck Wheels Eachof the tractordeck'sfront gaugewheelsisequippedwith a greasefitting.
  • Page 26 Leveling the Deck (Side to Side) If the cuttingdeck appearsto be mowingunevenly, a side to side adjustment c an be performed.Adjustif necessaryas follows: Withthe tractorparkedon a firm,levelsurface,placethe deck lift leverinthe top notch(highestposition)and rotatebothbladesso that they are perpendicular w ith the tractor. Measurethe distancefrom the outsideof the left blade tip to the groundand the distancefrom theoutsideof the rightbladetip to theground.Bothmeasurements taken shouldbe equal.

    DECK REAR ROLLER ADJUSTMENT The rear rollerson the mowerdeck are not designedto carry the weightof the deck.The rear rollersshouldbe adjustedto approxi- mately1/4"to 1/2"abovethe groundwhenthe deck is movedto the desiredcuttingheight. Placethetractoron a smooth,fiat surface,movethe deck to the desiredcuttingheight,and checkthe heightof the rear rollers.If contactingthe ground,or above 1/2"fromthe ground,adjust the rear rollersas follows: Thedeck rollerassemblyindexbrackethasfive adjustmentpositions...
  • Page 28 Changing the Engine If the engine hasbeen recentlyrun,the engine,mufflerand sur- roundingmetal surfaceswill be hotand can causeburnsto the skin. Exercisecautionto avoidburns. NOTE:The oil filter shouldbe changedat every oil changeinterval.To completean oil change,proceedas follows: Withengine OFF butstill warm,disconnectspark plugwire and keepit awayfrom spark plug. Removethe oil fill cap/dipstickfromthe oil fill tube.See Figure28.
  • Page 29 Fuel Filter Gasolineand its vaporsare extremelyflammableand explosive.Fire or explosioncan cause severeburnsor death. • Keepgasolineawayfrom sparks,open flames,pilotlights,heat, and otherignition sources. • Checkfuellines, tank,cap, and fittingsfrequentlyfor cracks or leaks.Replaceif necessary.Seea Searsor other qualified servicedealerto replacefuel line. • Beforereplacingthe fuel filter,drain the fueltank or closethe fuel shut-offvalve.

    Neverstoregardentractorwith fuel in tank indoorsor in poorly ventilatedareaswherefuel fumesmay reachan openflame,spark, or pilot lightas on a furnace,water heater,clothesdryer,or gas appliance. PREPARING THE ENGINE IMPORTANT:Fuelleft in the fueltank duringwarm weatherdeterio- ratesand will cause seriousstartingproblems. Topreventgum depositsfrom forminginsidetheengine'scarburetor and causingpossiblemalfunction of the engine,the fuel systemmust be eithercompletelyemptied,or thegasolinemustbe treatedwith a stabilizerto preventdeterioration.
