    Seats and Seat Controls This section tells you about the seats them, and fold them up and down. It also tells you about reclining front seatbacks and head restraints. Manual Front Seat CAUTION: You can lose control of the vehicle if you try to adjust a manual driver’s seat while the vehicle is moving.
  • Page 16 Manual Lumbar Control (If Equipped) If your vehicle has a lumbar adjustment, you can increase or decrease lumbar support in an area of the lower seatback. It is located on the outboard side of the seat cushion. To increase or decrease support, turn the knob toward the front or rear of the vehicle.
  • Page 17 Move the seat forward or rearward by moving the whole button toward the front or toward the rear of the vehicle. Moving the whole button up or down raises or lowers the entire seat cushion. Vertical Control: If your vehicle has power reclining seats, you can use this button to adjust the angle of the seatback.

    Reclining Seatbacks To adjust the front seatback, lift the lever upward. The lever is located on the outboard side of the seat cushion. Release the lever to lock the seatback where you want it. Lift the lever again upward and the seatback will go to an upright position.

    CAUTION: Sitting in a reclined position when your vehicle is in motion can be dangerous. Even if you buckle up, your safety belts can’t do their job when you’re reclined like this. The shoulder belt can’t do its job. In a crash, you could go into it, receiving neck or other injuries.

    On some models, the head restraints tilt forward and rearward also. To tilt the head restraints forward, grasp the top of the restraint and move it forward to where you want it to go until you hear a click. It will then be locked into that position until you need to move it again.

  • Page 23 Rear Seat (Extended Cab) Folding the Rear Seat The extended cab’s rear seat can be folded up to provide more cargo space. To fold the seat: 1. Pull forward on the release strap located under the rear seat cushion. 2. Fold the seat cushion upward until it latches with the seatback.
  • Page 24 Rear Seat (Crew Cab) The second row rear seat is a 60/40 split seat. Either side of the rear seat may be folded down to give you more cargo space. Before folding the rear seat on the driver’s side, insert the two buckles into the retainer in the seatback.

    To return the seat to the passenger position, lift the floor load panels and latch them into the seatback. Lift the seatback up and push rearward all the way. Then lower the seat cushion until it latches into position. Pull forward on the seatback and up on the seat cushion to make sure the seat is securely in place.

It should be worn over the shoulder at all times. 1-22 CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if you wear the shoulder belt under your arm. In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury.

In a crash, you wouldn’t have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces. If a belt is twisted, make it straight so it can work properly, or ask your dealer to fix it.

    To unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle. The belt should go back out of the way. Before you close the door, be sure the belt is out of the way. If you slam the door on it, you can damage both the belt and your vehicle.

    The best way to protect the fetus is to protect the mother. When a safety belt is worn properly, it’s more likely that the fetus won’t be hurt in a crash. For pregnant women, as for anyone, the key to making safety belts effective is wearing them properly.

  • Page 41 CAUTION: If something is between an occupant and an air bag, the bag might not inflate properly or it might force the object into that person. The path of an inflating air bag must be kept clear. Don’t put anything between an occupant and an air bag, and don’t attach or put anything on the steering wheel hub or on or near any other air bag covering.
  • Page 42 What makes an air bag inflate? In an impact of sufficient severity, the air bag sensing system detects that the vehicle is in a crash. The sensing system triggers a release of gas from the inflator, which inflates the air bag. The inflator, air bag and related hardware are all part of the air bag modules inside the steering wheel and in the instrument panel in front of the right front passenger.
  • Page 43 In many crashes severe enough to inflate an air bag, windshields are broken by vehicle deformation. Additional windshield breakage may also occur from the right front passenger air bag. Air bags are designed to inflate only once. After they inflate, you’ll need some new parts for your air bag system.
  • Page 44 Air Bag Off Switch (Regular Cab and Extended Cab Models) Your vehicle has a switch on the instrument panel that you can use to turn off the right front passenger’s air bag. If your vehicle is a regular cab model or an extended cab model, it has a switch on the instrument panel that you can use to turn off the right front passenger’s air bag.

A passenger has a medical condition which, according to his or her physician: causes the passenger air bag to pose a special risk for the passenger; and makes the potential harm from the passenger air bag in a crash greater than the potential harm from turning off the air bag and allowing the passenger, even if belted, to hit the dashboard or windshield in a crash.

  • Page 47 Servicing Your Air Bag-Equipped Vehicle Air bags affect how your vehicle should be serviced. There are parts of the air bag system in several places around your vehicle. You don’t want the system to inflate while someone is working on your vehicle. Your dealer and the service manual have information about servicing your vehicle and the air bag system.

    What if I add a snow plow? Will it keep the air bags from working properly? We’ve designed our air bag systems to work properly under a wide range of conditions, including snow plowing with vehicles equipped with the optional Snow Plow Prep Package (RPO VYU).

    To make the belt shorter, pull its free end as shown until the belt is snug. Buckle, position and release it the same way as the lap part of a lap shoulder belt. If the belt isn’t long enough, see “Safety Belt Extender” at the end of this section. This is because the back of the rear facing child restraint would be very close to the inflating air bag. Be sure to turn off the air bag before using a rear restraint in the right front seat position.

    Wherever you install it, be sure to secure the child restraint properly. Keep in mind that an unsecured child restraint can move around in a collision or sudden stop and injure people in the vehicle. Be sure to properly secure any child restraint in your vehicle even when no child is in it.

    When using a child restraint with a top strap in the center rear position, route the top strap through the fabric loop on the seatback. Then, raise the head restraint and attach the top strap to the anchor point located at the closest outboard position. Once you have the top strap anchored, you’ll be ready to secure the child restraint itself.
  • Page 68 There are also anchorage points at the rear base of the front passenger’s seat. Anchor the top strap to one of these anchor points. Be sure to use an anchor point located on the same side of the vehicle as the seating position where the child restraint will be placed.

With this system, use the LATCH system instead of the vehicle’s safety belts to secure a child restraint.

    Securing a Child Restraint in the Right Front Seat Position Your vehicle has a right front passenger air bag. There’s a switch on the instrument panel that you can use to turn off the right front passenger’s air bag when you want to secure a rear facing child restraint at the right front passenger’s position.

  • Page 81 1-68 CAUTION: Never do this. Here two children are wearing the same belt. The belt can’t properly spread the impact forces. In a crash, the two children can be crushed together and seriously injured. A belt must be used by only one person at a time. What if a child is wearing a lap but the child is so small that the shoulder belt is very close to the child’s face or neck?
  • Page 82 CAUTION: Never do this. Here a child is sitting in a seat that has a shoulder belt, but the shoulder part is behind the child. If the child wears the belt in this way, in a crash the child might slide under the belt. The belt’s force would then be applied right on the child’s abdomen.

    Safety Belt Extender If the vehicle’s safety belt will fasten around you, you should use it. But if a safety belt isn’t long enough to fasten, your dealer will order you an extender. It’s free. When you go in to order it, take the heaviest coat you will wear, so the extender will be long enough for you.

    Windows CAUTION: Leaving children in a vehicle with the windows closed is dangerous. A child can be overcome by the extreme heat and can suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke. Never leave a child alone in a vehicle, especially with the windows closed in warm or hot weather.
  • Page 86 Power Windows (If Equipped) If your vehicle is equipped with power windows, the controls are located on each of the side doors in the front and rear. The driver’s door has a switch for the passenger window as well. Your power windows will work when the ignition has been turned to ACCESSORY or RUN or when Retained Accessory Power (RAP) is present.
  • Page 87 Swing-Out Windows (Extended Cab) To open a rear swing window, flip the latch open and swing the glass out. The latch will catch when the window is fully open and it will also hold it in the open position. Sliding Rear Window (If Equipped) To open the sliding rear window, unlock the latch lever by pushing the lever toward the passenger’s side of the vehicle.
  • Page 88 Keys CAUTION: Leaving children in a vehicle with the ignition key is dangerous for many reasons. A child or others could be badly injured or even killed. They could operate the power windows or other controls or even make the vehicle move. Don’t leave the keys in a vehicle with children.
  • Page 89: Door Locks

    Your vehicle has one double ignition and all door locks. Your vehicle may also have a key that locks and unlocks only the center floor console (if equipped). If you ever lose your keys, your dealer will be able to assist you with obtaining replacements.
  • Page 90 There are several ways to lock and unlock your vehicle. You can use the keyless entry system (if equipped). You can also use your key. To lock the door from the inside, slide the lever rearward. To unlock the door, slide the lever forward.
  • Page 91 If your vehicle has this power door lock switch, press the bottom of the switch on either front door to lock all the doors at once. Press the top of the switch to unlock all the doors at once. The power door locks will operate at any time without the ignition being on.

You can exit the program mode any time by turning the ignition to ON (the locks will automatically lock and unlock to indicate you are leaving the program mode). If the lock/unlock switches are not pressed while in the programming mode, the auto lock/unlock setting will not be modified.
