Rear Tine Tiller
Models
410 Thru 420 Series
IMPORTANT: Read safety rules and instructions carefully before operating equipment.
Warning:
This unit is equipped with an internal combustion engine and should not be used on or near any unimproved forest-
covered, brush-covered or grass-covered land unless the engine's exhaust system is equipped with a spark arrester meeting
applicable local or state laws (if any). If a spark arrester is used, it should be maintained in effective working order by the operator.
In the State of California the above is required by law (Section 4442 of the California Public Resources Code). Other states may have
similar laws. Federal laws apply on federal lands. A spark arrester for the muffler is available through your nearest engine authorized
service dealer or contact the service department, P.O. Box 368022 Cleveland, Ohio 44136-9722.

Troubleshooting ... 13 Parts List... 14 This Operator’s Manual is an important part of your new Tiller. It will help you assemble, prepare and maintain the unit for best performance. Please read and understand what it says. Before you start assembling your new equipment, please locate the model plate on the equipment and copy the information from it in the space provided below. -

As with any type of power equipment, carelessness or error on the part of the operator can result in serious injury. - Page 4 Be alert and turn the unit off if a child enters the area. • Never allow children under the age of 14 to operate the tiller. SERVICE • Use extreme care in handling gasoline and other fuels. They are extremely flammable and the vapors are explosive.

Page 5: Assembling Your Tiller
Place flat washer on the hex bolt and thread “T” knob onto the hex bolt. See Figure 1. Tighten securely. • Tip the tiller back down so it rests on the tines. Attaching the Handle Assembly • Remove the handle adjustment lock, flange nut retainer bracket, shoulder bolt and lock nut from the pivot bracket. - Page 6 Tighten the bottom bolt and nut securely. Tighten the handle adjustment lock. Attaching The Gear Shift Rod NOTE: Model 420 series tiller has two control rods. The gear shift rod is the longer rod. • Remove the T-handle, nut, hairpin clip, flat washer and rubber washer from the end of the gear shift rod.

Cable operating. Clip • Standing on the right side of the tiller, visually examine the belt (inside the belt cover). It should not be turning. If the belt turns with the unit in neutral, adjust by moving the hex nut below the cable bracket down a few turns. -
Page 8: Know Your Tiller
On Model 420 series, the handle may also be adjusted to be in line with the tiller, or swung to the left or right so the operator is not walking in the freshly tilled soil. To adjust the handle position from side to side, pull the handle adjustment handle back, pivot the tiller handle to desired position and release the handle. -

Repeat steps 4 and 5 until engine starts. Refer to engine manual for additional engine information. NOTE: After starting and prior to using the tiller for the first time, be certain to check the clutch adjustment as described in “Checking the Clutch Adjustment” section of the Assembly Instructions. -

The handle height may be adjusted. On Model 420 series, the handle may also be adjusted to be in line with the tiller, or swung to the left or right. Refer to the handle adjustment on page 8 for details of handle adjustment. -
Page 11: Maintaining Your Tiller
The dirt washes off the tines easier if rinsed off immediately instead of after it dries. Always towel dry the tiller afterwards and apply a light coat of oil or silicone to prevent rusting or water damage. Never use a "pressure" washer to clean IMPORTANT: your tiller. -

See Figure 14. SECTION 8: OFF-SEASON STORAGE If the tiller will not be used for a period longer than 30 days, the following steps should be taken to prepare the tiller for storage. -
