    Making Connections Connecting the Telephone Line and External Devices The copier/fax has three jacks on the side for connection of the telephone line, a telephone, and an additional external device such as an extension phone, answering machine, or data modem. If you only have one telephone line and plan to use the copier/fax for receiving both faxes and voice calls, you will need to connect a telephone and/or an answering machine to the unit.

    Installing the BJ Cartridge in the Copier/Fax When there is no BJ cartridge installed in the copier/fax, the LCD displays PUT IN CARTRIDGE. Follow this procedure to install the BJ cartridge: Make sure the unit is plugged in. Lift the document guides to open the DOCUMENT GUIDES ADF (Automatic Document Feeder).

    Group Dialing Creating Groups If you frequently send the same document to several destinations, you can create a group of these destinations and register them under a speed dialing button or code. This enables you to press a single one-touch speed dialing button, or press Coded Dial and enter a two-digit code to send the same document to all the destinations in the group.

    Glossary Alternating current. The type of electrical current available from a wall outlet. Activity Report A journal of the copier/fax’s fax transactions, both sent and received. Automatic Document Feeder. The device included in the copier/fax that automatically feeds the document being faxed, copied, or scanned into the copier/fax. Auto FAX/TEL switching See Fax/Tel switching.
  • Page 173 Bits per second. Refers to the speed with which a fax machine sends and receives data. Broadcasting Transmitting documents to more than one destination. Bubble Jet (BJ) printing An ink jet type printer that heats the ink to a boiling point in a nozzle to form a bubble. When the bubble expands, there is no room left in the nozzle for the ink and the ink is projected onto paper.
  • Page 174 Dots per inch. A unit of measurement for indicating a printer’s resolution. DRPD Distinctive Ring Pattern Detection. Allows you to assign different ring patterns to distinguish voice and fax calls using your telephone company’s special services. Dual access (Multitasking) Enables the copier/fax to receive a fax (in memory), even if it is copying or printing a document from memory.
  • Page 175 Group dialing A dialing method that enables you to dial up to 111 registered one-touch speed dialing or coded speed dialing numbers together as a group. This means that you can press just one or three buttons to enter numbers when sending the same document to many destinations.
  • Page 176 Noise A term applied to a variety of problems that impair the operation of telephone lines used for faxing. Noise level See dB(A). Numeric buttons The round, numbered buttons on the operation panel marked the same as a standard telephone keypad. Press them to perform regular dialing. They are also used to enter numbers, letters, and symbols when registering numbers and names, and for entering two-digit codes for coded speed dialing.
  • Page 177 Printable area The area of a sheet of paper on which the copier/fax can reproduce text or graphics (the printing area is smaller than the paper). Pulse See Rotary pulse. Quick-on-line sending Quick-on-line sending is the easiest and quickest way to send a document. After a document is loaded into the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder), the copier/fax begins scanning the entire document into memory.
