    The D60 offers a full set of features for different types of shoot- ing situations. We’ll be exploring all the camera’s options in this book. In addition to features, an SLR camera gives you access to the full range of lenses from wide-angle to telephoto.

    What’s in the Box? To get started, let’s take a quick look at what came in the box with your D60. ● Nikon camera strap. This is a sturdy nylon strap, but if you’d prefer one with more padding take a look at manufacturers that specialize in camera straps, such as OP/TECH USA.

    Visual Tour In this section we’ll look at all the buttons, dials, and other features on the D60. This overview will help you become familiar with the layout of the camera. I’ve also included a brief description of each feature. As you read the rest of the guide use these pages as a reference to find a button or as a reminder as to what it does.
  • Page 11 VISUAL TOUR Flash button: Press this button to release the pop-up flash. You can also use it to increase or decrease the power of the flash.     The dial on the top of the camera is used to select the exposure mode. In the middle is the accessory shoe where an external flash unit can be attached. The D60 comes with a protective cover over the shoe. To remove it, slide the cover toward the back of the camera.

Thumbnail button for viewing images as thumbnails and making images smaller during playback. Also accesses the Help information about various camera settings and functions. Zoom button for making images larger during playback.
  • Page 15 The shooting information on the monitor is nicely laid out, but for vertical pictures you’d have to turn your head to read the information. Not so on the D60! When you turn the camera to the vertical orientation the shooting information display automatically rotates as well.

    Quick Start No doubt you’re eager to start taking pictures with your new D60. Don’t want to read the whole book just to start taking pictures? Then this is the section for you! You’ll learn the basics of your camera and how to start taking good pictures. It covers everything from charging the battery and inserting the memory card to composing and reviewing images.

    Make sure the camera is off before inserting the memory card. The D60 uses a Secure Digital (SD) memory card. The card slot is located on the right side of the camera (when looking at the camera from the back). Open the cover to the memory card slot by pressing and sliding the cover toward the back of the camera.

    QUICK START FORMATTING YOUR MEMORY CARD Before you take pictures using a new memory card you should format the card in the camera. Whenever you want to erase all the photos on the memory card you must format it again. Press the button, then use the multi selector to move through the menus.

  • Page 21 xxii HOW TO GET GOOD PHOTOS OUT OF THE CAMERA IN 5 MINUTES If your monitor doesn’t show this screen press the button one more time. We’re just going to adjust a couple settings here. Use up and down on the multi selector to move to the different options on the monitor.

Place your thumb near the dial at the top right on the back of the camera. The index finger on your right hand is used to push the shutter release button, turn the camera on and off, and use nearby buttons.
