    Chapter Overview CSM-20S is an S-AIT (Super Advanced Intelligent Tape) library with a built-in S-AIT drive. Up to 20 cartridge volumes can be set and used. The unit can also be connected to, and used with, a workstation or server.

    With the rack mounting kit, ACY-RKSL (sold separately), the S-AIT library can be installed on an EIA STANDARD, universal pitch 19-inch rack. (The height of CSM-20S is five rack units.) Rack mounting kits are available from your dealer. For specifications of rack mounting kit, refer to the operating instructions of rack mounting kit.

    Components and Functions Front Front door closed A Door Lock Key Locks the front door using the supplied door lock key. B Front Door Opened to set up or replace a set of cartridges with a magazine. C Import/Export Slot (Mail Slot) The shutter automatically opens when a command is executed in your application software.

    Installation Chapter Overview This chapter describes the general procedures for positioning the S-AIT library, connecting it to the host computer, and turning it on. This chapter also describes initial setup. Installation and setup procedures may vary slightly depending on your system. Remove transport screws 1 and 2 (M4) on the left side, as illustrated. Remove transport screw 3 (M3 with nut) on the right side, as illustrated. Remove screws (M3) for drive on the top of the unit, as illustrated.

    Installing the S-AIT Library The S-AIT library weights about 27 kg/59.5 lbs. (with a single drive installed) and has the following dimensions. With two drives installed, the S-AIT library weighs approximately 31 kg/68.3 lbs. Make sure that the surface where you will install the S-AIT library is appropriate before installing the unit.

    Connecting the Power Cable Note Make sure that the electrical outlet you use to connect the unit is properly grounded. Verify the power cable plug to make sure that it matches the AC IN connector receptacle. Connect one end of the power cable to the AC IN connector and the other end to the power outlet.

    Connecting the SCSI Bus Cable Connect the S-AIT library and the host computer with a SCSI cable. This section describes how to do so. Use an Ultra 160/m SCSI LVD cable commonly sold in stores to connect the unit to the SCSI bus. The S-AIT library uses a 68- pin half pitch connector.

    When the S-AIT library is one of several devices on the SCSI bus Turn off all SCSI devices on the SCSI bus, including the S-AIT library. Caution When connecting or disconnecting a SCSI cable to SCSI devices (including the S-AIT library), turn off all the SCSI devices. Failing to do so may result in damage.

    Operation Chapter Overview This chapter explains the control panel, basic settings, handling the cartridges. Using the Device The device can be used under two different modes, the ON LINE and USER modes. In ON LINE mode, the device is controlled through SCSI commands from the host computer.

    Assigned Element Addresses An element is a physical location where a cartridge can be kept. Applications use element addresses to differentiate between the elements of the S-AIT library. In this library, the element addresses are assigned to the cartridge slots and the S-AIT drives in the following manner.
  • Page 29: Setting The Cartridges

    Setting the Cartridges Prepare a cartridge and set it to the S-AIT library. Preparing Cartridges Affix the provided bar code label to the cartridge, then prepare it for use. Caution By default, the library is set to read bar codes. When the library has been set to read bar codes, it takes very long for the initialization process after the library is powered on or some operations are performed with cartridges.

    Setting the Cartridges from the Import/Export Slot Cartridges can be set to the library from the Import/Export slot. To set the cartridges, set the target element addresses. For information about element addresses, refer to “Assigned Element Addresses” (page 28). Use a command such as “OPERATION” - “IMPORT MEDIUM” in USER mode and set the target element addresses.

    Setting the Cartridges with Magazines Up to 12 cartridges can be set at once with magazines. Execute [OPERATION] - [MAGAZINE XCHG] in USER mode. Executing the command performs an exchange operation of magazines. For details, see chapter 4 “MAGAZINE XCHG” (page 47). The lock of the front door is unlocked and you can now open the door.

Cartridge lock release lever Insert a cartridge with the write-protect switch upward Caution Do not insert the cartridges in the wrong direction. If the direction is mistaken, the magazine cannot be placed properly into the library, which may cause damage the cartridges and/or the library.
  • Page 33 Caution When you insert/remove a magazine in/from the library, never press the cartridge lock release lever above the handle. If you do so, the cartridge is unlocked, causing a failure of the library. When the front door is closed, the cartridge lock is automatically released.

CTG INVENTORY This command is used to detect whether any media is set in store elements and data transfer elements and display the status result. Make sure to execute the command every time when you manually insert media into the elements or eject it from the elements and update the media information on the library.

    Caution Avoid specifying duplicate SCSI ID. When a duplicate SCSI ID is specified, a conflict message appears and the setting is canceled. Once you change a SCSI ID, press the “ENTER” button. The following screen appears. SCSI-ID SET CHANGED! SHUT DOWN POWER The new SCSI ID becomes effective when the device is powered on next time.

    When an Error (Warning) occurred in Both the Library and the Drives at the Same Time When an error condition exists in the drives and then an error occurs in the library, the error in the library is displayed first over the error in the drives. The Error/Warning LED lights in the same way as the occurrence of other errors.

    Using the Media Chapter Compatible Cartridges S-AIT library uses: • S-AIT data cartridges • S-AIT cleaning cartridges Only use the cartridges above with your S-AIT library. Do not use other types of cartridges, such as LTO Ultrium, SDLT, or DLT. Data Cartridge S-AIT data cartridges contain a half-inch AME (Advanced Metal Evaporated) tape.

    I Spring-loaded Hub Used by the unit to rotate the cartridge reel. Caution Do not close the spring-loaded hub as this may cause loading problems. J Reel Lock Used to prevent the tape from moving when it is outside the unit. When you insert a cartridge into the unit, its reel locks are released automatically.

    Cleaning Cartridge Use a Sony S-AIT Cleaning Cartridge SAIT1-CL to clean the S-AIT library drive heads. When a head needs to be cleaned, “Warning Drive Cleaning Request” appears on the LCD display and the Error/Warning LED flashes. For details about how to use the cleaning cartridge, see “DRV CLEANING” on page 50.

    Storage precautions • Store cartridges in an appropriate environment (see page 72 for details). • Always place cartridges in their plastic cases as soon as possible when you are not using them. • Do not place cartridges on or near devices that may produce magnetic fields such as computers or monitors as this may erase the data on the tape.

  • Page 75 Although the application software and the library are working properly, data cannot be read/written. • Verify that the write-protect switch of the cartridge is set to writable. • Use only S-AIT cartridges. • If a cartridge has been used for a long time or very frequently, replace it with a new cartridge.

    Opening the Front Door with Front Door Release Pins To open the front door of the library when the power is OFF, use the supplied front door release pin. Insert a front door release pin in the pin slot on the front door. The door lock of the front door is now unlocked.

    Error Code List When an error occurred in the S-AIT library, the Error/Warning LED lights in orange. When an error occurred, check the error code appeared on the LCD panel and then recover from the condition based on the list below. Afterwards, turn off the power and then turn on the power again.
